Our Finally Finished Dining Room Reveal

Spread the love.

We’ve been living in a finished but unfurnished dining room for over seven months now. It’s been a big, empty space, which has felt super cold with the high vaulted ceilings. Plus, we replaced all the carpet with hardwood floors. Even though it’s felt cold, our little dudes loved it! It’s been their play area to ride their bikes around doing laps.

We took our time buying furniture because I hate spending a ton of money on things for our home with two toddlers because it usually lasts two seconds before it’s covered in food and Lord knows whatever else. So everything we bought for the space was fairly inexpensive.

We bought this home two years ago and almost lost it in a bidding war.  It checked all of the boxes for us, so when the homeowners chose us, even though someone outbid us, there are no words for how grateful we were.

This is what our dining room looked like when we first moved in. Of course the first thing to unpack was our Christmas tree!

We knew we wanted to create a more closed off but large space for our dining room. We love to entertain and gather with friends and family, so we knew we wanted a large enough space to have a gigantic table for all of us to sit together in one space.

We had planned for Jamie to build our dining room table, and we want to fit a minimum of 15 people. But when we started sourcing materials, the costs quickly added up. Jamie still wants to build one, but right now we’re going to save to do it right. Large chunky legs alone, when sourcing, were $400 each. Instead, we scored this table on sale for $575 total!

Where the formal dining room was, we made it into a cozy music room, extending off our dining room. We were originally calling this space the wine room, but now that we put a bar into our basement, we moved all the wine down there.

All the gold frames I’ve been collecting throughout the years at different flea markets and second-hand stores. The large oversized mirror I found at Home Goods for less than $50.

The one thing Jamie wanted in our home was black window trim. So we’ve been slowly but surely painting the trim in our home. We thought black base trim would be a little too much, so we decided to leave that white.

The piano was a hand-me-down from my great-grandma and is one of my favorite pieces. I grew up playing piano so it was so special to inherit this gift. I took all of our family’s wedding photos and made this wall into a little family tree with vintage white frames.

We’re going for a modern boho feel for our home as we slowly renovate it. Not sure if it’s working, but we’re pretty happy with it! And that’s all that matters…in the words I live by from one of my favorites, Mercedes Austin, “Create a space you love, and your life will launch off of that.”

Here’s a quick breakdown of tutorials we’ve made, during this project and others, of projects we did in this space.

Leave a comment and let us know if you have any other questions. Happy DIY’ing, friends!
