Safe & Stylish Baby Home Decor

Many thanks to Smith & Noble for sponsoring today’s post and encouraging us to share our #safeandstylish home decor and safety tips.

When we bought our second home to renovate we didn’t know at the time that we were about to be expecting. But we knew that having a large family was on the top of our priority list so we chose finishings for our home with a baby brain in mind.

Today we are partnering with Smith & Noble to share our safe and stylish baby home tips hoping to inspire you to make your home #SafeAndStylish! We are also offering $50 off each window treatment. And as an added bonus, enter the sweepstakes for a chance to win $1,000 worth of custom window coverings. Click HERE for more details.

The most important thing you want to keep in mind when designing a home for your baby (or pet) is to to design a room for a child or baby that is safe as well as incorporates lasting style that grows up with them. Safety precautions range from covering outlets, keep toilet lids closed, and window cords. And when it comes to decor, you always want to keep in mind those sticky little and busy fingers.

Choose Durable Carpet & Upholstery

One of the many things I love about our home is the carpet that we chose. Carpet is really hard to pick out. We went to two different flooring suppliers and were instantly overwhelmed. But luckily for  us, we chose a carpet that hides everything. Maybe too much of everything. I have spilled red wine, smeared poop, Greyson has peed…I can’t even count how many times…all over our carpet and everything has instantly came right off. We installed Stainmaster carpet from Lowe’s.

Unlike our bamboo hardwood floors, which I would not recommend for your baby. Although I love the look of these deep brown floors, I have to clean them a lot. Every crumb or my blonde hair that gets dropped onto the floor, sticks out like a sore thumb. But…they do look pretty when they’re cleaned!

Our couch was another win! We bought our couch out from Ashley Furniture, and the stain proof resistant that they put on our couch works like a charm. We have spilled numerous things on this couch and everything has pulled right off.

Buy an Easy to Wipe Clean High Chair

We LOVE Grey’s high chair. We bought Phil & Ted’s High Pod. I wanted a modern looking high chair that was extremely easy to wipe clean. The highpod high chair allows your baby to transition from food time to snooze time with a 3 position seat recline. It is safe and stable in any height or angled position.

My favorite part is that the spongy seat liner is removable and dishwasher safe with no food-trapping seams, the aerocore liner is easy to keep hygienically clean. Made from rubber-like material, aerocore is waterproof, hypoallergenic and wipe clean, not to mention insulating and super comfortable, keeping your baby focused on their job – eating.

Covering Outlets

Instead of buying outlet covers, we installed baby safe plug-ins.  These are spring loaded shutters that close off the openings to the contacts. The only time these shutters will open is if they are pushed simultaneously (as in you plugging something into the outlet). Since your baby wont be able to compress both openings at once he will be unable to poke anything into the outlet.

Baby Proof Stairs & Railings

Another area of the stairs that many people forget to baby proof is the banister itself. Spindles need to be 4 inches apart so that your baby doesn’t get their head caught in-between the railings. We remodeled our staircase and placed new spindles. However, if you are not remodeling, the easiest way would be to install a banister guard. This is sheet of plastic or netting that runs along the length of the banister, covering up the gaps.

Keep your toilet lids closed & buckets of water out of site

At Greyson’s 9 month check up I told my pediatrician that the toilet had become Greyson’s new best friend and he threw anything and everything into it. She looked at me concerned and warned me to be extremely careful and to always put our toilet seats down and keep the lids closed. I then read up on why and have been having nightmares since. I don’t know why but that had never crossed my mind that a baby could easily tip into the water and drown. This was also a great reminder to us when renovating to keep our 5 gallon buckets that we use for many things out of site.

Nursery Decor

I wanted to keep Greyson’s nursery very simple, clean and modern. There are so many different themes you can go with in your nursery and children’s rooms, the options are endless. I wanted to add character with simple child accents pieces.

The anchor pillow and the white washed wooden anchor wall art came from Pottery Barn Kids. And the white washed blue whale wall art I picked up from Patina.  I love the shabby-chic casual look that you can incorporate into any nursery. One of the first tips I got from my cousin early on was to not hang anything on the wall behind the crib. That was another thing I had not thought about. Being if it came loose, it could fall down on the baby.

The double seated rocker from Walmart and we love it. It’s comfy, adorable, it fits us all!

I bought this adorable white washed seahorse mobile from Pottery Barn Kids. Greyson loves starring and trying to play with it. When hanging your mobiles, ensure that they are secured into the ceiling and are not low enough for your baby to play with and pull down.

Replace cord window treatments with cordless window treatments

Cords can be extremely dangerous to your child or your pet. Like anything they want to pull on and play with and can get easily tangled up within them. Make sure to replace all your cord blinds with cordless. My mother in law suggested to us to get cordless blinds for the cleanliness. Like most blinds I am accustomed to, I thought it would be days before the blinds would break and wouldn’t be able to go up and down. So I was a little hesitant thinking of how these would remain working with no cord. They are amazing and so worth every penny.
