Design Trends Twitter Chat with Cambria at KBIS 1

Spread the love.

Last week, we flew out to Orlando for the KBIS and IBS show. The biggest home show of the year! We had such a blast and you can find the full recap HERE. One of the fun collaborations we did at the show was team up with Cambria for a live Twitter chat talking 2017 Design Trends. It went a little over an hour long, we had knowledgable people jump on, and we wanted to recap the conversation for you guys that couldn’t join us.

construction2style KBIS Twitter chat with Cambria, talking home design top trends 2017

For starters

Cambria kicked off the chat by suggesting we’ll see a return to opulence, with more matte finishes, bold colorways, regal colorways, and inventive textures. While we jumped in with our excitement to see black is back, along with dark metal design selections. Another trend we see emerging is the use of warmer materials to replce light and bright selections. For example, terracotta tiles will replace currently popular cool and white tones. Cambria pointed out that the warmer tones can look especially good when paired with rich kale greens or primrose yellows.

And may I say…YES! COLOR! I’m happy to say goodbye to stark white and only neutrals within home designs. And what makes it so fun is that color is popping up in not just paint color and fabrics but lighting fixtures, plumbing and countertops. Don’t be afraid of color you guys!

It’s all new and different! I also anticipate a lot of curated and customized home decor. Homeowners are shifting away from the mass produced merchandise and instead looking to more handcrafted and personalized pieces.

As we move into summer of 2017 warm metals like copper, brass and rose gold you’ll see a shift away from this super polished look. I expect we’ll see a more industrial aesthetic, with black steel and burnished metals taking over the home.

Opposites Attract: High Contrast Creates Balance

Well the good news is, I have never liked anything to match within our designs. Ha! I’m obsessed with mixing metals, colors, and textures. For 2017 I’m most excited to bring in the natural charm. We are currently working on a kitchen where we’ll be mixing metals, and materials. Terracotta is being used for the floor, dark wood cabinetry, mixed metal for the hardware and fixtures, and bold patterned accent wall from @fireclay and Cambria’s Nevern countertops.

Hadley and Carrick are darker material choices but make a very bold statement. Hadley is navy blue and the Carrick reminds me of a concrete countertop, which is trending right now as well. Neverne, like we’ll be using, is also a nice design selection to bring in those nice and warm earth tones.

Bold is Back

Here at construction2style, we’re already getting a ton of requests for warm kitchens. Dark cabinetry, wood paneling, bold countertops. However, a lot of our clients are still loving the grey tones so we’ve been incorporating finishing selections that compliment both tones. We’ve also been incorporating selections like terracotta, and even cork.

Old World Opulence

Be bold! The biggest way to bring in this look is to layer the tones and textures. Don’t be afraid to mix materials. Clients always start looking at me cross eyed when I talk about mixing colors and materials. Ha! Until I show them a mood board for inspiration and then they are all in. Wallpaper is great way to bring in this look. And you don’t need to go too crazy with the wallpaper, just do an accent wall to give a bold statement to your space.

Pattern Play with Unexpected Materials

There are so many fun ways to add texture into a space. Rugs, curtains and throw pillows are probably my three biggest favorites. You can add texture with textiles from pillows to bedding to table clothes to throw blankets. Rugs are also an easy and fun way to tie the room together. Plants is another fun way! Especially with the warm earthy tones and greenery being so hot this year. We also add texture with a lot of architectural elements. Sometimes a home doesn’t always allow for this but we’ve put in coffered ceilings, wood plank walls, herringbone flooring. Something to keep in mind when remodeling.

Modern Applications for Classic Materials

That brings us to the final meta-trend for 2017, and that’s the inventive use of classic materials. To me it’s all about the relationship. Get to know who you are working with. Make sure you see eye to eye on your design style and that you trust them. If you trust them, they are going to ensure a smooth process and that you get the best custom pieces designed for your space.

Wrap Up

So there you have it. All the new home design trends for 2017! We had such a great time chatting with Cambria at the KBIS show, and came back super inspired and ready to incorporate these trends in our client projects.
