How to Make Sure You’re Antiquing Doesn’t Go Awry

Spread the love.

Looking to incorporate some vintage pieces into your home? Summer is the perfect time to get outside and go antiquing. It can be overwhelming to go to your first thrift shop or flea market. With so many people and items, it’s easy to lose sight of what you initially came for. You don’t want to end up like me at my first antique fair. I had $20 in cash, no bags, no bubble wrap, and a small car. I ended up coming home with a set of plates that I never used (or even liked), but I just had to buy something. Knowing what it is that you’re looking for, and sticking to the plan, is key to making sure you leave with the right things to compliment your home, and not just things to fill your cupboards.

To keep you from following in my wandering footsteps, we’ve put together a list with a few tips to help you score some hidden treasures in your town!

  1. Cash is king – This helps you bargain with vendors and helps you stick to your budget! If you run out of cash, you can just walk away. With a credit card, it’s easy to keep swiping away, and that always leads to a few purchase regrets.

  2. Buddy System – Bringing a friend (who also loves antiques) can be a great help. You’ve got an extra hand to lift heavy items, as well as another set of eyes to help spot hidden gems. Also, a second opinion on items you might be iffy about always helps. Beware! If their eye is too good, you better be a speedy walker. Can’t have your partner in crime snagging all the good deals.

  3. Do Your Homework – If you’re looking for a certain item, you have to make sure to know the size of the space you’re going to put it in. Be sure to take measurements before arriving! Also bring a measuring tape with you, so you don’t end up going home with an item too big or too small (or no items at all!).

  4. See the Future of Your Furniture – Can you visualize this item in your home? Do you have the perfect spot for this piece? If the answer is no, then you probably don’t need it. Last week, I found a great little table I loved, but when it came down to it, I just couldn’t find the perfect place for it. Oh well, on to the next one!
