Both our main level and lower level living rooms have been under construction for what feels like years because we’ve slowly been updating little by little both rooms since we bought our home almost 3 years ago. But we are officially on a mission, now round four, to get both spaces finalized so we can cozy up now that the fall temps are hitting and winter will be here before we know it.

If you’re new to our main level living room transformation, you can rewind to our design blog post and our demo day post where we chatted through all the things we’re up to in this space.

Last year in this space, we simply painted the beige walls gray and golden oak mantle white to spice things up, but we knew that we would eventually scrape the popcorn ceilings, update the lighting and eventually, re-do the mantle area. We also knew we’d replace the flooring, but we could never decide if we wanted to put carpet in again or carry the hardwood from our kitchen to the living area. After now having lived in the space for a few years, our littles have completely destroyed the carpet and since this is such a high traffic area, we decided to replace it with hardwood.

We did the demo of our remaining checklist back over the 4th of July weekend and have been living with concrete floors and no lighting since. Now that the ceilings got scraped, knockdown is up, and the ceilings are painted, we could get our lighting back up.

And now we are under construction for the last time…

Typically hanging the lights is the last thing that we do in our construction projects, but we were getting a little tired of coming home to no lights and since the messy stuff is out of the way, we’re good to go to get them back in.

As you can see previously, our living room had a ceiling fan, which we never used, so we knew that we wanted to replace the fan with a fun and different semi-flush light. Our ceilings aren’t overly tall in this area either, so we also had to be cautious about what style of light we wanted to incorporate.

After debating between a handful from Hudson Valley Lighting, we ended up choosing their Fleming semi-flush fixture in aged brass.

We were on the hunt for something different, a statement piece, yet also wanted it to flow with the overall design in the space. With the ceilings only 8′ high, we had to be cautious about the size to make sure that it didn’t overpower the space.

When we came across the Fleming, we knew it was perfect! We especially loved the oblate spheroid shapes of the bulbs and how the light illuminated in all sorts of directions.

Since we’re putting a coffee table under the light fixture, we knew it would work out just fine with the 8′ ceilings and the 14.5″ height of the fixture itself. We made sure we won’t have to worry about anyone hitting their head on it.

Another great aspect about this fixture is that it’s LED and gives off so much light! As you can see before, we didn’t have a light fixture in our fan, so we never had an actual main light, besides a handful of can lights in the area. It’s so nice to have some extra light in this space!

Now it’s installed and it’s already looking so good! Even if the space is still a hot mess, now every-time I walk into the room and see this light, it puts a big smile on my face. Can’t wait to continue on and keep wrapping everything up!
