Why We Finally Got a Bed Frame After 12 Years of Marriage!

There is something slightly embarrassing about admitting that you have been married for twelve years and never owned a proper bed frame. Not a beautiful upholstered statement bed. Not even a real headboard. Just a mattress and box spring sitting quietly against the wall like we were still in our first apartment.

For seven years in this house, we kept saying we would update the room when we renovate. We renovated kitchens. We redesigned living spaces. We built entire homes for clients. And yet our own primary bedroom stayed stuck in someday mode.

We upgraded to a king bed years ago, which at the time felt like a big step forward. But somehow that felt like enough and we stopped there. Apparently just vibes carried us through more than a decade of marriage.

So instead of tying this room to a future renovation that is not even on the calendar, we decided it was time. We partnered with Slumberland Furniture and committed to refreshing our primary bedroom without touching a single wall. No drywall. No demo. Just thoughtful furniture and better decisions.

Starting Where We Are From

One of the reasons this partnership felt natural is because we are Minnesota through and through. Slumberland was founded in Minnesota in 1967 and still carries that Midwest, family oriented feel. It does not feel corporate and distant. It feels grounded, local, and built on relationships.

As a Minnesota-based company ourselves, that matters to us. There is something special about walking into a business that has deep roots in the same community you are raising your family in. It aligns with how we try to build and design- long term, intentional, and people first.

We visited the Slumberland Furniture store in Maple Grove to start the process and it felt approachable from the moment we walked in. Not overwhelming. Not pushy. Just helpful and design forward without being intimidating. We filmed a reel while we were there so you can see the experience, but what stood out most was how easy it felt to make decisions in person.

The Bed Frame We Should Have Bought a Decade Ago

The first and most obvious choice was the bed. We chose the green cadmori upholstered bed from Slumberland Furniture and I am not exaggerating when I say it changed the architecture of the room immediately. After twelve years of marriage without a real bed frame, setting up this upholstered bed felt symbolic. It felt grown up. It felt like we finally finished something we should have finished a long time ago.

The upholstery adds softness without feeling fussy, and the clean lines keep it modern and grounded. Slumberland Furniture carries a range of upholstered beds and modern bed frames, but this one immediately stood out for its rich green tone and tailored silhouette. If you have been searching for a neutral upholstered king bed or a modern headboard that anchors your primary bedroom, this is the kind of piece that quietly elevates everything around it. The moment it was installed, the room no longer felt temporary.

Nightstands That Keep Us Honest

Next came the nightstands and this is where I got slightly particular. We knew we did not want drawers because drawers become junk collectors in our house. If there is a drawer, it will eventually hold receipts, cords, random notes, and things we forget about. We chose the Cormmet Accent Tables from Slumberland Furniture, which technically look like something you would see styled as side tables in a living room.

The second I saw them, I knew they were meant for our bedroom. They feel sculptural and clean and because they are open and simple, they force us to keep clutter off the surface. There is something refreshing about choosing furniture that supports the lifestyle you want instead of enabling the habits you are trying to break.

They give the room character without feeling bulky or traditional. In a primary bedroom refresh, proportion and restraint matter more than people realize. These tables let the upholstered bed shine while still holding their own visually.

Lighting Without an Overhead Plan

Our bedroom does not have overhead lighting and for years that felt like a design flaw. Instead of seeing it as a limitation, we decided to treat it as an opportunity to layer warmth intentionally. Bedrooms should feel calm and inviting at night and overhead lights rarely achieve that on their own. We incorporated the Hallburg Floor Lamp from Slumberland Furniture to add height and ambient lighting.

The vertical element balances the bed and adds depth to the room. By layering table lamps and the floor lamp, the entire space feels softer and more intentional. If you are refreshing a bedroom without changing electrical, lighting is one of the most transformative decisions you can make.

Texture and Real Life

At the foot of the bed, we added the Kiki Upholstered Storage Bench from Slumberland Furniture. It was supposed to store blankets. That was the plan. Instead, our kids now try to crawl inside it, which honestly makes me love it even more.

Functionally, it gives us hidden storage and completes the visual line of the bed. A storage bench in a primary bedroom adds polish while serving real life, especially in a house with kids who wander in and out constantly. It softens the room while making it more practical.

Underneath everything, we layered in the Vienna Rug in smoke. A properly scaled area rug changes how Slumberland furniture or other pieces sit in a room. It anchors the bed, defines the layout, and softens every step. If you are searching for bedroom rug ideas or how to make your primary bedroom feel cohesive, start with scale and texture.

We also brought in the American Modern Dresser for clean and timeless storage. It feels durable and long term instead of trendy. That was important to us because this refresh was about longevity, not just aesthetics. We wanted pieces that would still feel right years from now.

The Delivery Experience That Changed Everything

I have to talk about the delivery experience because it might have been my favorite part of this entire process. We went to the store, made our selections, placed the order, and before we knew it everything was scheduled and on its way. There was no long drawn out waiting period and no complicated logistics on our end.

The Slumberland team arrived and were in and out of our home in about an hour. They carried everything in, assembled it perfectly, placed each piece exactly where we wanted it, and removed every single piece of packaging. It was efficient, respectful, and seamless.

And here is the honest part. I had not even fully cleared the room out before they arrived, so we were quickly hauling a few last minute items while they worked. Had we ordered boxes and attempted to assemble everything ourselves, it would have sat in our bedroom for at least a week. There would have been tools everywhere, cardboard stacked in corners, and if I am being fully transparent, there probably would have been at least one argument over instructions. This is a full-service delivery, that does cost extra but let me tell you – it is worth it!

Instead, it was done in an hour. Perfectly set up. No debris left behind. No stress lingering in the room. That level of service completely changes how you feel about investing in new furniture.

What We Still Need to Do and Why It Does Not Matter Right Now

Do we still need new carpet? Yes. Do we still need to repaint the walls? Absolutely. Do we need to scrape the popcorn ceiling and remove the horrible ceiling fan that has been bothering me for year?! Without question. Those things will come. They are on the list. They just are not urgent anymore.

Because this refresh already changed how we use the space. Before this, we spent almost zero time in our bedroom outside of sleeping. It did nothing for us. It did not invite us in, it did not feel layered, and it did not feel intentional.

Now we actually want to be in here. We sit on the bed and talk longer. We fold laundry in here without rushing out. It feels calm and finished even though the carpet is not new and the ceiling still needs work.

That is the part I did not expect. The furniture alone shifted the energy of the room enough that we enjoy it now. And sometimes that is all it takes to stop waiting for someday.

After twelve years of marriage, we finally have a real bed frame. And somehow that feels like both a design decision and a life decision. If you have been waiting to love your primary bedroom until a major renovation happens, consider this your reminder that thoughtful furniture can completely transform how a space feels long before construction ever begins.
