Remodeling With Your Salvaged Items

Spread the love.

Most all of our clients want to keep some of their existing materials to repurpose in the new design plan. Whether it’s the cabinetry, trim work, fixtures, tile, appliances, butcher block, flooring, cabinet hardware, and more, they’re looking for ways to repurpose these items in their new layout. Not only is this eco-friendly and helps to keep costs down, but it’s fun to be up for the challenge!

So today we want to share with you five ways to repurpose for you to consider when remodeling your home.

Kitchen Cabinets

All of the kitchen remodels we have done, our clients wanted to salvage a lot of their cabinetry. However, when working on a new design plan, we almost always rearrange the floor plan, which means we are moving the cabinets around.  When this happens we have to shift cabinetry, and then the cabinets don’t always fit in their new layout. To solve this problem we often times have to build some new pieces to fit with the old.

One of the services we offer is custom cabinetry. We are either able to use your existing cabinetry, or completely build new cabinetry that matches your existing cabinetry perfectly.

Here’s a few examples in which we have done this.

OLD

Sometimes old cabinetry just needs new paint to help with transforming your space. Once you get a new backslash, hardware, and possibly countertops it’ll look as good as new!

Expand Your Island

Expanding your island is another great alternative to incorporate the old with the new. A lot of times we just simply add onto the existing island to create a much larger countertop.

Microwave in the Island

As you can see we added material onto the existing island to extend the countertop around the stove and add the microwave into the island to save cabinetry space above.

Another great alternative is adding pillars out from the island and place a bigger slab of countertop to create a larger island.

Furniture

Unless you have a specific chair in mind that you have found, there really is no need to pay full price for new furniture. There are so many great deals out there online on sites like Craigslist, Facebook groups, and second hand stores. As long as the furniture has the bones of the look you’re going for you can always paint, reupholster, or add some fun new pillows for a new look.2015-12_Molitor-Bath-5_2

Our most recent investment home came fully furnished, but a lot of the furniture was outdated. After we reupholstered the furniture and painted the dining room table and hutch, it all looked as good as new and we saved a fortune!

This vanity was another example of repurposing materials. Our client wanted a taller and brighter vanity so instead of going out and buying a new one, we simply just added in material on top of the vanity to lift it higher. Saved hundreds of dollars and didn’t take much time.

Lighting

Lighting is another great way to save on costs! There really isn’t any type of light fixture you can’t find on Craigslist. Lucky for us, our investment property came with the most beautiful chandeliers. Again, some more outdated than others, but after we found some online for under $20, and replaced a couple of the outdated ones, it looked amazing!
