Working Together to Create an Accessible Kitchen Design

Spread the love.

Last fall, we heard about Jordan Braund, a Wisconsin high school student, and athlete who was in a horrible car accident on the way home from practice. She was in the hospital for 10 weeks recovering from a broken arm and pelvis. Both of her legs had to be amputated from the knee down because of the crash. When Jennae from Blush & Whim told us this story and asked about assisting with the design of making her home more accessible, we knew we wanted to help in any way we could!

After meeting Jordan and her family, we were so inspired by her strength and determination. She is the oldest of six kids, and her siblings all look up to her, which is so cool! She was telling us how much she loves to cook and how it’s been a lot harder since the accident. We want to create a kitchen that is much more accessible for Jordan and to make it a space where she can do what she loves again.

We were talking about the project with some of our design friends – Jeanna, owner of Pinnacle Interior Designs, and Stephanie, owner of The Divine Living Space. When they heard about the project and being able to help this family with a more accessible home, they jumped on board as well. Together, we want to create a kitchen design for this family so that they can all be in the space together.

For the kitchen design, the plan is to create a space that is more functional for this family of eight. That includes lots of storage, a big island they can all sit around, lower appliances for Jordan to easily access, and wider aisles between the perimeter and island. We also want to make sure Jordan can access the appliances, like having a microwave drawer, rather than having to reach above.

A simple, yet timeless design including gray cabinets, marble looking quartz countertops, Elkay sink, and Delta touch faucet will refresh the look of the space and make it more functional for the family as well.

We’re so excited to partner with Jeanna and Stephanie to design out this kitchen for the Braund family! Stay tuned for updates on social and ways you can help make this kitchen become a reality for such an amazing family.
