There are two heights when it comes to bar stools, and they are counter height and bar height.
You’ll want to ensure that you know which height you need before going on a hunt for the perfect stool because there are so many options! Barstools can be a beautiful addition to your kitchen or bar area and can truly make a statement in your space.
Today, we’re sharing the difference in heights and some of our favorites in each category.
Counter Height
Counter height stools are meant to fit under a standard countertop height. In kitchens, the standard height of your countertops is 36″, so the stools will be between 24-27″ tall.
If you have a large island that has an overhang but isn’t raised up in the seating area, you’ll be looking for a “counter height” stool.
Backless
If you’re looking for a simple counter height stool that you can tuck under when they’re not in use, we love these black metal stools from Target. With the clean lines and simple profile, they can easily slide under your counter, so they’re out of the way.
Backless stools also help keep the sightline into your kitchen clear, especially if you have a fun backsplash like this kitchen below!
With a Back
These Luka Counter Stools are the perfect combination of leather and metal. With a higher back, they provide a comfortable spot to sit and hang out while entertaining in this basement bar.
The curved legs and leather seat of the stools make for a classic look in this white and gold kitchen. A similar stool is this Bowden Faux Leather counter stool, which has a lower back, giving support but allowing the stools to be tucked under the counter as well.
In Morgan and Jamie’s kitchen, the Pike Counter stool in cherry wood complements the wood floor and adds a contrast to the dark cabinetry and white countertops. The higher back makes it look more like a chair, which is perfect for larger islands.
Bar Height
In Morgan and Jamie’s basement bar, as you can see below, the spot for stools is bar height since it’s a step up from the counter. With this height, you’ll want to look for “bar height” stools. Bar height stools are typically 28-33″ tall and work with a 42″ tall bar counter.
Backless
In this kitchen, a square backless bar stool allows a clearer sightline into the kitchen. For a similar look, this Backless Paige bar stool has a velvet top with wood legs for a transitional and timeless feel.
With a Back
We’re big fans of these Room & Board Lira barstools in cashew leather. They have a lower back, which still provides support when sitting, but doesn’t block the view of the bar.
