All trends come and go and are constantly evolving in slightly different ways. Trends are something you always want to keep in mind when renovating your home. As we update to sell our personal homes, we always think of the resale value we can bring to not only our homes but yours. Making smart renovations to your home increases with the upgrades and improvements you or we help you make to your home. We hope this guide helps you think of valued design trends you can bring to your home for this upcoming year.
My friend Tim Brown recently published The Ultimate Designer’s Color Guide for 2016 and I could not help but fall in love with his post and be inspired to write my own guide for Home Remodeling Trends of 2016.
Spa Like Bathrooms
Transforming your bathroom into a peaceful retreat is trending for the home remodeling industry in 2016. Even within the smallest of bathrooms, you can remodel your bathroom into a retreat where you can unwind and getaway after a stressful day with details such as plants, wood plank walls and earthy design tones.
We recently completed this bathroom renovation that was inspired by the Kohler Design Center. Bringing the outdoors in, was our approach to this design. We wanted to incorporate natural materials, such as as stone, wood, and marble. We added natural warmth with the use of colors and textures. We will be posting all materials used in January as well as the full before and afters.
Spacious Kitchens
It is a fact that homeowners spend more time and money on kitchen remodels than any other room in their home. More and more homeowners are either wanting to tear down walls or make their kitchen transitional. Transitional kitchens bring a sit-down area within their kitchen space. Islands are must for these spacious kitchens that bring flow from one are to another.
We are currently working on a few kitchen renovations and oversized islands and removing of walls are a must for all homeowners. Everyone wants an open floor plan where they can entertain within their kitchen while reaching into their living area. I think we can all agree that despite the size of your kitchen, everyone wants to be in the room. So why not bring that living area to the space?
Decorating with Glass & Metal
Mixing glass and metal will be big in 2016. This year will be all about the shine! Whether you use it within the pendant lighting, backsplash, appliances or tabletops it will help to bring light and chic look to your space.
One of our favorites is the mix of glass and metal mosaic tile backsplash for your kitchen or accent to your bathroom.
Subway tile has always been trending, but as of recent they are getting more and more glassy and shiny. This will continue to evolve into 2016. Patterns and colorful subway tiles to create lively and fun spaces will be big this upcoming year.
Mix Metals
I love mixing hardware and metal finishings. There are a lot of opinions our there regarding this rule, but I have always combined silvers with golds, whether trending or not. I just love the look. I believe you do not have to match your metal finishings to the decor your choose in the room. When mixing metal finishings, it helps treat different objects within the room like art and really stands out. When everything matches, nothing stands out and the room all blends in. So don’t be afraid to get a little crazy, and mix and match your metals within your finishings and decor in 2016.
Clever Storage
Homeowners and home remodelers are getting more and more clever with their storage. Such as built in wine racks, spice racks, free standing pantries, hidden electronic stations, and more. Check out these 9 secret places that you can add secret storage to your kitchen, here.
Clean Lines and Subtle Design
With the modern style, cabinets have become simpler with clean lines. This trend will continue to evolve within 2016. The classic and simple look of shaker style cabinetry will gain popularity being it provides this minimalist design look.
White on White
Kohler is anticipating white on white is going to be the color palette for classic and contemporary styled kitchens. It is clean, bright, and can be decorated with any touch of bright and vibrant decor.
Tips for a Traditional White Kitchen from Kohler
- Bring out the industrial flavor of a converted warehouse with commercial-style metal counter stools and a classic schoolhouse clock.
- Add subtle interest to an all-white kitchen with texture, like the horizontal ridges in a traditional farmhouse sink.
- Bring traditional style out front via stainless steel faucets with vintage details. They’re both modern and traditional at once.
Pantone Paint Color Trends
Let’s talk home paint colors. The Ultimate Designer’s Color Guide for 2016 emphasizes top fashion designers because fashion lines have proven to be great indicators to where color trends are moving in aspects of web design and home improvement authorities. But what I love about design trends whether in your home, clothing, or web designs- design is design- and they all trend the same way and have an impact on you, as Tim states.
More and more homeowners are seeking mindfulness within their homes, creating an environment to relieve their stresses. Colors that psychologically fulfill this peace are becoming more prominent. Rose Quartz and Serenity combined bring a balance of the warmer rose tones and cooler blue reflecting wellness and sense of peace.
Sherwin Williams predicts an earthy tone for2016. According to Sherwin Williams, SW 7008 Alabaster is the 2016 color of the year.
Behr’s Our 2016 Trends address the importance of color in constructing stimulating environments. Brights mingle with dark moody tones.
Strong color is back in 2016, gold detailing and geometric patterns and prints.
Trends come and go and sometimes we don’t always agree with them. But one of the one things I did learn in fashion school was that they do set the tone of what’s in and what’s to come in the home remodeling industry. Some of these trends may fit your style and home and some may not. Whatever remodeling needs you do choose, we hope you choose us!
