As you know we have been working on a kitchen remodel for the past couple months and we are so close to being done and as always, can’t wait to share every itty bitty detail. I’m so excited because my favorite part of the reno experience is watching a project all come together in the end. However, we’re going to be so sad to not interact with these homeowners on a daily basis, they were the best clients to work with. Hopefully they have some more projects for us! hehe.
All that is left to be done is flooring and decor shopping, which will all be wrapped up in the next week. Like almost all finishing selections in your kitchen, picking our flooring isn’t the easiest so we wanted to chat to share with you how to choose your flooring and some of the experiences we have had. Hope this article helps!
If you remember back to our first post about this project, we removed the wall that divided the kitchen from the dinning room. So being there was a hole in the floor from where the wall was, the homeowners decided now was the time to sand and refinish the floors. Being they had nice hard wood flooring already in their home (and a lot of it), there was no need to replace the flooring in the entire home. Sanding, and refinishing the floors were the perfect way to go!
BEFORE
AFTER
Have you thought about your floor recently? Do you realize how much beating and suffering this part of your house receives on a daily basis? Aside from getting stepped on, a typical floor in your home is exposed to a lot of torture from intense foot traffic, friction with seating and furniture, and practically all kinds of litter.
There will always come a time when our floors can only take so much beating, to a point when it needs to be fixed or replaced entirely. Take the case of the kitchen floor, which is easily one of the most beat-up floors in your home. After years of use, your kitchen floor may show signs of damage and degradation.
If you’re thinking about replacing your kitchen flooring – or if you’re planning the right kind of flooring for this part of the house – then check out these tips on how to choose your kitchen floor.
Assess a typical day in your kitchen
First off, you have to know what you would regularly do inside your kitchen. Sure, you’re going to cook, but you need to check what kinds of food materials and spills may drop on the floor. Based on this alone, you can already identify the perfect match for your kitchen needs.
Check adjacent rooms
Your kitchen design and overall house layout can also give you an idea on what flooring to use. Kitchens that are next potentially wet areas like the pool and bathroom will need floor materials that are easy to clean and dry. This particular home the floors and now rooms carry throughout and will be the most highly traffic area, being it will be their main hang out area.
Predict usual foot traffic
Aside from aesthetics and ease in cleaning, another feature in choosing the right kitchen flooring material is strength. If you expect a lot of people to walk around the kitchen regularly, make sure that your flooring can stand this frequent pounding. You should also look at your pets and how their paws and their weights can affect the integrity of the kitchen floor.
Balance purpose with style
When dealing with home improvements such as changing the kitchen floor, you may find yourself being tempted to focus solely on luxury design / décor and interior design rather than the room’s functionality. Before making any decisions, check yourself and try to strike a balance between function and form.
Choose foolproof kitchen floor materials
If your knowledge on kitchen flooring and layout is literally zero, your best option is to look at tried-and-tested materials that work well on kitchen floor surfaces. Some of the most popular materials for kitchen floors include the following:
- Tiles: Whether it’s made of ceramic or porcelain, tiles are both attractive and easy to clean. We used wood looking tile for our personal bathroom remodel and we absolutely love it
- Vinyl: Easy to install and clean, vinyl is another go-to floor material for kitchens. We recently replaced carpet throughout one of our client’s homes. They foster animals and being accidents can happen wanted the flooring to look nice without spending a ton of money. It looked just like wood floors, we were so impressed!
- Hardwood: Its comforting appearance and feel make hardwood a top kitchen floor choice for homeowners. However, note that wood floors are prone to water damage.
- Concrete: The durability of concrete flooring makes it perfect for the kitchen.
You may think that changing your kitchen floor is a small job, but in reality, it’s not! Even HGTV agrees that the kitchen floor is a “major design statement.” In other words, make sure that you really think about your kitchen floor before buying anything.
And that’s my favorite guy in the world, saying WAHOO!! We’re almost done!! haha, never a dull moment on the job.
I love that you talked about how by assessing a typical day in your kitchen, you can identify the floor material that will be perfect for you. We’re thinking about remodeling our kitchen, and with the kids all over the place, we want a material that’s kid-proof. That can be easily clean, and that’s also great looking. I’ll read carefully your piece on how to choose your kitchen floor. I’m sure it’ll be of great help!
