We wrapped up another fun project, this time in Victoria. Our client came to us wanting to make some simple updates to their kitchen without having to do a total overhaul. When they moved last year, they took the initiative to paint their cabinetry white, but still wanted a little something to give the space a refresh. There are so many simple ways to update your space that won’t break the bank, but make a big difference! First, let’s check out the before and the inspiration…
Before
Our client wanted more space for their island for entertaining and prep work, so we suggested adding a couple of legs to increase the length for seating and getting new countertops. Just by replacing the countertops, your kitchen will feel freshened up and like a brand new space. We also suggested a light, bright backsplash, new faucet, sink, and pendant lighting. Since the cabinetry, countertops, and backsplash were so light and bright, we recommended painting the island jet black to offset it.
Mood Board
Our client loved the look of a black island, so instead of replacing the one they currently had, we recommended painting it instead to cut down on costs and be able to use what they already had. Other elements that inspired our client included fun lighting, the clean look of quartz, and white and bright kitchens.
In Progress
After
By adding legs to the island and painting it jet black, it becomes a focal point in the space and also provides more counter space for prepping, along with space for seating. Our first thought was to square off the end of the island, but since our client had a cooktop already in the island, we kept the angle and added legs to save the original and make it more cost effective.
We went with white Cambria quartz countertops and brick Cle Tile for the backsplash in a herringbone pattern instead of a traditional basic subway tile layout. One way we like to switch up the classic subway tile look is to use handmade tile or bricks that give it some dimension and texture and then install it more uniquely, like the herringbone pattern. It’s still a timeless look but adds a fun element. The wicker pendant lights from Birch Lane were also the perfect touch to bring a little more warmth back into the space.
Replacing the sink and faucet with a new stainless steel Elkay sink and new Delta faucet also freshened up the space and gives the sink area a crisp look, especially next to the quartz countertop. We love this sink because it won’t crack, chip, or peel and going with a stainless steel sink option, especially a high-quality one like Elkay, is an excellent choice because it is non-porous, hygienic, durable and will resist rust and corrosion for a lifetime. Another added benefit is Sound Guard which is a non-toxic latex based material that helps absorb sound, maintain water temperature, and reduce vibration so it will be less noisy as you’re cleaning big pots or lots of dishes.
How beautiful is this tile?! Our client loved the clean look it brought to the kitchen.
Sunroom Refresh
This was a fun one! Our client wanted to do something fun and bold in their sunroom and add some texture to the ceiling. They wanted the wood panels to look just like the flooring in our kitchen, and we weren’t entirely sure how we were going to match it perfectly.
After buying and testing a few different material options, we decided to just put the flooring up on the ceiling. First time doing that and definitely not our last! We loved how it turned out. Lambrusco engineered hardwood flooring from Urban Floor was used and then complemented with an oversized copper dome light from Restoration Hardware. We then added a fun black, bold hexagon floor tile to the floors and painted all the walls Snowbound by Sherwin Williams to keep the space light and bright. We loved how this sunroom turned out! Such simple updates to make a big impact.
Simple Updates
In addition to the kitchen and sunroom, we added a few simple updates that made a big difference in the space. One of those updates was painting the fireplace mantle white. This living room space flows into the kitchen, so the light and bright mantle complement the white cabinets, countertops, and backsplash well.
Another simple update was adding these black sconces in the master bathroom. If you’re wanting to refresh your space and aren’t looking to spend a lot of money, think about replacing light fixtures. This simple update can make such a difference and make your space feel brand new.
And there ya have it! This was a fun project and cool to see how little updates can make a home feel so different and freshened up. If you loved any of the materials we used in this space, click the links below to find them.
