Homemade Fall Scented Playdough

Spread the love.

One of our little dudes favorite activities is creating things with Playdough! And also leaving it out to dry, which means we go through Playdough fast and waste a lot of money. Until now, because we have decided to start making our own Playdough! This is such a simple and inexpensive way to make some fun with your kids, because they’ll love making it just as much. Plus it’s fun to walk through with your kids and teach them just how things are made.

And bonus, I bet you have all the ingredients right at home, which leads to it being incredibly inexpensive. All you need is flour, salt, water, cream of tartar, coconut oil (vegetable oil can be substituted for coconut), food coloring… and if you want to add some scents into your batch like we did for fall, some essential oils.

Mix the ingredients together for a few minutes until it starts to form into a ball, that is not sticky. If it is sticky, add a bit more flour into your mixture.

Once the mixture has formed into a ball of dough, drop in your essential oils for a fun fall scent. We used 2 drops of Thieves and 2 drops of Cinnamon Bark.

Once all mixed together with the scents, remove from heat and allow it to cool. Once cool, if you’re making multiple different colors, divide the balls of dough into different bowls and add in your different colors.

I let the boys create their own colors, so as you can see, sometimes they just turn black with all of the colors they like to add in. haha!

But it’s too much fun not to let them and see how proud they get from the colors they create.

Surprisingly Beckam actually did create a beautiful fall color!

Once you’ve stirred the food coloring into the dough, make it into a ball. To store the dough, throw it into your plastic ziplock bag to reuse again.

The boys clearly also used way too much food coloring, but all you really need is a couple drops of color and it’ll go a long way. And don’t worry, once it’s mixed into the dough and the balls are formed your kids won’t get food coloring all over once they go to play with their dough. It just gets a little messy when you’re working the food coloring into the dough, if doing by hand. But when I do it, I typically just use a spoon to mix it all together.
