How to Install a Wood Plank Wall

Wood Plank Walls

Spread the love.

Good Morning Friends!

We were live on WCCO this morning talking about DIY Fall Trends you guys can do to your home. One of the weekend projects we chatted about was our favorite- wood plank walls. So we wanted to write a full blog post for you just in case you missed the segment being we were on air at 5:40am! (Our eyeballs are still burning).

Here’s a full video recap from our segment:

There isn’t a place I can think of where you can’t install a wood plank wall. From accent walls, to behind bookshelves, to ceilings, it always looks great and makes a statement.

Shiplap Design

Shiplap is the new biggest thing, and I for one am obsessed! I rave about our dear friends at JKath all the time. They are so incredibly talented and I am always in awe of their work. They do shiplap for their clients all the time, and since we haven’t had the chance to do one yet, we’re sharing some of their incredible remodels using shiplap designs.

The first step to any wood plank wall is choosing your design style.

Do you like the white, clean sleek walls?
Do you want more of a warm, dark wood?
Do you like the more beat-up farmhouse type of feel?

Once you’ve chosen the look you want to go for, you can choose the type of material you want to work with.

For this shiplap design, JKath used MDF. They then routered the edges and painted the MDF white. MDF isn’t real wood, but it is a great option for wood plank looking walls because then you don’t have to worry about the boards warping at all.

Wood Plank Design

The next step once you’ve chosen your material is either painting or staining the wood. For this project below we custom matched the stain to the rest of the trim and woodwork in their home.

Once your planks are painted or stained it’s time to lay out your designs. If you’re going for the shiplap look, it’s pretty easy to layout the designs since the wood spans the entire length of the wall.

One of the most classic layouts is the brick pattern. With this pattern each row is offset by half of the boards width. Once you’ve decided on your pattern it’s time to measure, cut, and hang.

The key to hanging a wood plank wall is making sure everything is straight. We’ve never worked in a home where the ceilings are perfectly level. So make sure to start at the top, left hand corner, making sure to follow the level and not the ceiling. Once you’ve determined where your board needs to hang, nail in with a nail gun, and continue along moving from left to right and down.
