San Diego has always held a special place in our hearts. Last year, my husband Noah and I, had an unforgettable baby moon here basking in the city’s perpetual sunshine and perfect 75-degree weather. Fast forward to this year, and we found ourselves back in this beautiful coastal city, this time with our Melrose (13) and Giselle, now 11 months old, and another little one on the way—Solango, due at the end of November. We couldn’t wait to explore more of San Diego’s endless attractions and share our experiences with you.
1. 90-minute San Diego Harbor Tour
Our adventure began with a 90-minute San Diego harbor tour, which is an absolute must for anyone visiting the city. The tour offers an incredible perspective of the city’s skyline and its bustling harbor. We sailed past iconic landmarks like the USS Midway Museum, the Star of India, and the Coronado Bridge.
Melrose was fascinated by the sight of the Navy ships and the playful sea lions lounging on the docks. The gentle breeze and the sparkling water made for a perfect start to our trip. Whether you’re a history buff or simply looking to relax and enjoy the views, this harbor tour is a fantastic way to kick off your San Diego adventure.
2. Star of India
Next on our itinerary was a tour of the Star of India, the world’s oldest active sailing ship. This historic vessel, docked at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, offers a glimpse into the past with its well-preserved cabins and exhibits.
We climbed aboard the ship and wandered through its decks, imagining what life must have been like for sailors in the 19th century. The girls were equally intrigued, especially when they got to ring the ship’s bell. The Star of India is not just a museum; it’s a living piece of history that transports you back in time, making it a captivating experience for all ages.
3. Unconditional Surrender
No trip to San Diego is complete without a visit to the Unconditional Surrender statue, also known as the kissing statue. This iconic sculpture, inspired by the famous World War II photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse, stands tall near the USS Midway Museum. It’s a symbol of love, joy, and the end of a tumultuous period in history.
Noah and I couldn’t resist reenacting the moment near the statue. The picturesque backdrop of the bay and the striking pose of the figures made for a memorable snapshot. It’s a simple yet powerful reminder of the city’s rich history and the enduring spirit of its people.
4. Day Trip to Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Del Mar
If you’re looking to get out of the city for some beach time, a day trip to the beaches north of San Diego is a must. We decided to explore Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Del Mar, each offering its unique charm and beauty.
Encinitas, with its laid-back vibe and stunning coastline, was our first stop, and it’s actually where we stayed the year prior. We strolled along Moonlight Beach, where Melrose tried to teach Giselle how to build sandcastles without destroying them, while Noah and I soaked in the serene surroundings. Next, we headed to Solana Beach, known for its trendy shops and vibrant art scene. The girls were delighted by the colorful murals and the quaint boutiques. Lastly, we visited Del Mar, famous for its scenic vistas and upscale dining. We enjoyed a leisurely lunch at a beachside café, savoring fresh seafood as we watched the waves roll in.
These coastal gems provide a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, making them ideal for a day trip with the family.
5. Taking the San Diego Bay Ferry to Coronado Island
One of the highlights of our trip was taking the San Diego Bay Ferry to Coronado Island. The short ferry ride was a delight, offering stunning views of the city skyline and the soothing waves. Once we arrived, we couldn’t wait to explore the charming island with its picturesque streets and welcoming atmosphere. A special treat was visiting the legendary Hotel del Coronado, featured in the classic movie “Some Like it Hot” starring Marilyn Monroe. Strolling through the grand halls and beachfront of this historic hotel felt like stepping back in time to Hollywood’s golden era.
6. Golf at Torrey Pines
For avid golfers, a visit to San Diego wouldn’t be complete without a round at Torrey Pines Golf Course. Perched atop the cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, this world-renowned course offers breathtaking views and challenging fairways. The North and South courses, each with their unique layout and difficulty levels, provide an unforgettable experience for golfers of all skill levels. Additionally, the lush greenery, well-maintained facilities, and occasional sightings of local wildlife make Torrey Pines a must-visit destination for any golf enthusiast.
7. Dining in Little Italy
San Diego’s culinary scene is as diverse as its attractions, and Little Italy is a prime example. This vibrant neighborhood is a food lover’s paradise, offering a wide array of restaurants, cafes, and gelato shops.
We decided to have dinner at a charming Italian trattoria, where the aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces filled the air. The kids enjoyed their pasta dishes, while Noah and I savored the rich flavors of our risotto and seafood. After the meal, we indulged in some gelato from a nearby shop, a sweet ending to a delightful evening.

8. Exploring Old Town San Diego
Stepping into Old Town San Diego feels like traveling back in time. This historic district, known as the birthplace of California, offers a fascinating glimpse into the state’s early days.
We spent the afternoon wandering through the quaint streets, exploring the adobe buildings and charming shops. The girls were captivated by the colorful displays of traditional Mexican crafts and the live performances of mariachi bands. We also visited the Whaley House, one of the most haunted houses in America, adding a touch of mystery to our adventure.
Old Town’s rich history and vibrant culture provide a unique and immersive experience, making it a highlight of our trip.
