The panels of bookshelves, the back of built-ins, or behind your open shelving, all great places to add style, color, and texture. Shelving is a great way to fill up a blank wall, give dimension to a room, or create an art piece with a combination of books and decor. It’s also a fun opportunity to get creative!
However, for a cohesive look, you need to make sure that you balance the color, shape, and color.
Wallpaper
From traditional to bold, wallpaper is back in a big way this year. Wallpaper can do a lot more than what paint can, and it creates a larger WOW factor. If you’re like me, and it scares you to wallpaper an entire room for fear of you’ll get sick of it in a year and have to scrape it off, adding it in behind your shelving is the perfect (and subtle) way to go.
Background Color
Adding color behind your shelving is a great way to make a bold statement in your space, like the Styled Press. I always like to choose a signature color for the entire room and then sprinkle it throughout. Whether it’s the wallpaper or simply a fresh coat of paint, it’s sure to create a bold look.
Tiles
Whether it’s open shelving or more of a built-in look, adding tile for a backsplash is another fun option. And this doesn’t have to just go in a kitchen. Another great option is adding in tin ceiling panels for behind your shelving, which is half the cost.
Arrange Books by Color
What gives the most texture to your shelving is what’s actually on the shelves. Arranging the books by color is a fab way to make a statement and add texture to the room. You want to balance both the shape of the books and texture of the books throughout the shelves. With books, I like to choose a signature texture of books to sprinkle throughout not only the books, but materials in the decor. I get all my home staging books from second hand stores, always for under $1.
Wood Paneling & Shiplap
Shiplap, our favorite. Another interesting option to spice things up. If you’re going all white, MDF works great to create your shiplap backdrop. We have a full tutorial on how to do that HERE. Otherwise, old pieces of wood or new lumber with a rustic feel give warmth to a space.
