Last weekend, we moved into our first home! Two years ago, we got married and moved up to the Twin Cities into our first apartment. It was a big move for us at first since we are from a small town in southwestern Minnesota, but we’ve loved exploring the area and starting to call this place home. At the beginning of the summer, we started looking for a house to put down some roots. Now that we’ve done some updates to our home, it was time to pack up and say goodbye to our first apartment.
Before everything got packed up, we took pictures of the space so we could always remember our first place together. Here’s a little tour of our apartment…
The Living Room
We spent a lot of time in this room having friends over, playing games, and hanging out. It was also where I would work when working from home. The sliding doors out to our patio let in a lot of natural light, and it was a cozy space.
During college, I had shown Matt this coffee table I found on Pinterest made out of pallets. We decided to build it out of pallets he had gotten from work. It was our first DIY project together, and we found that we approach projects very differently. His engineering mind and my creativity are a great combo, so even though it was quite the process, in the end, it was a success! Now, we love having this project we made together in our home. It was also good practice to work together on a smaller project before we began our big home update!
With decorating our first place, we used a lot of what we already had and items we collected over the last two years. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on decor, there are so many tutorials on decor projects you can create yourself. Plus, thrift stores are always a great place to find inexpensive decor.
The wood sign is from our wedding and I used a thin wood piece, stained it, and then wrote on it with a white paint marker.
Another decor item that I made was this wreath over our TV. By using an embroidery hoop, I attached faux eucalyptus around the outside to make a DIY wreath.
I also made this DIY Fall Macrame Wreath out of another embroidery hoop, faux greenery, and macrame yarn that we hung in our entryway.
Bedroom
Another DIY project in our bedroom was this blanket ladder. If you want to make your own blanket ladder, check out c2s’s tutorial HERE.
The decor on the nightstand is from when I went to Magnolia Market in Waco with my mom and sister a couple of years ago. Something I always try to keep in mind when decorating a space is that it’s ever-evolving. Over the past two years, I changed out decor and moved things around a lot, but it kept the smaller space feeling fresh.
Patio
Finally, our little patio. I loved this space because it looked out to trees and was so pretty in every season. We would sit out here to read; I would work from this chair and always loved the ever-changing view.
