In the world of cocktails, the Moscow Mule holds a special place, not only for its refreshing taste, but also for its unique presentation in a copper mug. Most drinks have specific glasses that are attached to them and as soon as we see a certain glassware we know exactly what a person is about to drink. Moscow mule is famous for its distinct copper mug it comes out in. It’s a fun presentable drink with a character.
Copper mugs have a unique history that intertwines the migration of Russian immigrants and the rise of this drink in the United States.
Once upon a time a Russian immigrant Sophie Berezinski arrived in the United States in the early 40s of the 20th century. Sophie carried with her a family tradition of copper craftsmanship, a skill that had been passed down through generations. With dreams of a better life, Sophie settled in New York City and began to explore opportunities to share her family’s craft with her new home.
The legend reads that Sophie meets a struggling vodka distributor named John G. Martin and this encounter forever changes the course of history. Martin, at the time, was desperately trying to find a way to sell his Smirnoff vodka in a market dominated by whiskey and gin. Together, they invent a smooth vodka cocktail that would eventually captivate Americans.
Moscow mule is a combination of the refreshing blend of vodka, ginger beer, and lime, when served in a chilled copper mug, created an unforgettable drinking experience.
