Floor installation of any kind is a very difficult job unlike small repairs, but this guide should help you install a laminate floor by yourself and then provide the proper cleaning to maintain it and keep it for as long as possible.
Step 1: Preparations
Like any home renovation, preparation is one of the most important steps. Before you tear out the old floor, ensure that you have the necessary tools and materials for the project at hand, because once you start, trips to the store could cause delays. Measure the space to determine the surface area of your floor, and plan your budget to be a little more than you think you need. You might also want to prepare the cleaners you will be using after the job is done – just optional.
Step 2: Prepare the Surface
Remove baseboards and store them before doing anything else. Then start from the edge of a wall pieces gently lift the old floor. Continuously remove nails and staples, clean up debris, and inspect the surface of the floor surfaces in need of repair.
Step 3: Make the Base
Some floors are sold with pre-installed underlayment, also known as a vapor barrier. If not, underlayment can be bought separately and installed one strip at a time, starting with the longest wall. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to form abutting edges and seal seams.
Step 4: Cut the Doorposts
After the underlayment down, place a board, so that its edge runs along the side the post. mark it, and with a handsaw, cut parallel to the floor to creating a section that allows the board to fit under a post for a clean, professional look.
Step 5: Install Flooring
Installing the planks parallel to the longest wall. Note that the first board is the most important so position it so that its groove faces the wall and is against the corner of the room. Remember to allow for natural expansion and contraction by placing spacers between the board and the wall. After placing all the boards you’re done, and you have completed a relatively difficult home improvement job.
Finish everything up with a nice floor cleaning. You might want to add a few rugs here and there for more aesthetic satisfaction, but do some rug cleaning before that – of course you don’t want a dirty rug on your brilliant new floors, right! Again, pick the right cleaners for the job, or just get a cleaning agency to do it for you – you already did the hard part, let somebody else do the rest. After the home cleaning is done, step back and enjoy the nice view of the great job you did.
