April is almost over, and we are so excited to welcome May into our homes, backyards, flowerbeds, and decks.

I know many women love May because of Mother’s Day.

May is my favorite month for many other reasons. In Ukraine, school ends on May 25th, religiously every year. We also have two public holidays in May: Labour Day ( May 1-2) and Victory Day (May 9th), so you don’t go to school on those days, and conveniently my birthday is on May 18th.

So growing up, I remember May being this warm month, was preparing the way for summer, and it was full of days off, picnics, parades, and parties.

Mother’s Day is a special day to honor and celebrate the women who have played a significant role in our lives. The day is celebrated every year on the second Sunday of May in the United States.

It is a day to express gratitude and love towards mothers, grandmothers, and wives.

The significance of Mother’s Day in the United States dates back to the early 20th century when a woman named Anna Jarvis started a campaign to recognize the efforts of mothers. Jarvis’s mother had passed away, and she wanted to honor her memory by creating a holiday that celebrated all mothers.

Her efforts were successful, and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.

I didn’t grow up celebrating Mother’s Day simply because it wasn’t a holiday for us. We always had an International Women’s Day on March 8th that honored all women, but not specifically moms.

The United States was a place where I truly learned and embraced this holiday. I haven’t moved to Minnesota with my parents, so all the Mother’s Days that I celebrated here were with my Minnesota mom.

We always had brunch and had her open presents. It was lovely.

Mother’s Day After You have Kids

I once was told that you don’t fully understand what parenting is until you have a baby, and I was skeptical about that. I am a teacher by trade, and my life path took me to mentor, educate and help raise many kids. I just happened to be in a position where those kids were not mine.

That changed last October. I married my Noah in the fall of 2021 and gained a bonus child through the process. It was a blessing and a relief all at the same time!

I felt like I was ready to care for our 10-year-old at the time, but there were some difficulties I hadn’t foreseen, and God had to prepare and coach me for that.

In October of 2022, we had a baby, and our world turned upside down. I wasn’t even sure if we could have kids, so Giselle’s appearance truly felt like God’s blessing!

It will be my first Mother’s Day, and I am so excited about it! I have always been on the child’s end of this equation, giving Mother’s Day gifts, getting flowers, and making desserts, and now this holiday all of a sudden includes me, and I get to be a part of the beautiful circle of mamas and get to be celebrated!

My sister-in-law Morgan once said I can’t wait to go to California, I really need some me-time and a break, but once I get there, I will miss them like crazy. Motherhood is wild.

That statement hits home a little too much. Who knew life could become so wild and wonderful all at the same time?
