6 DIY Woodwork Treatments

Last week our team crashed Projects in Person for a DIY Crash Course Event. We had such a great time! We teamed up with other local creatives here in the Twin Cities and showed a bunch of home improvement gurus some skills. Well, hopefully, we did. Here are 6 DIY woodwork treatment ideas!

At the event, we shared, step by step, how to create a few different custom wall treatments. As there are so many cool wall treatments to do to your space; we first showed how we pull together our inspiration for our projects by creating inspirational mood boards.

Then the guys, Jamie and Topher, led demonstrations on mini-shiplap walls. Today we wanted to recap the tutorials and handouts we gave out at the event for those of you, who missed it or for those who forgot.

And here are five of our favorite custom wall examples that you can DIY with our how-to instructions.

Shiplap

Our favorite. We do this one all the time! A lot of our clients love the look of traditional modern with a touch of the farmhouse feel.

So we often incorporate a little shiplap, and it always does the trick. It gives enough of that subtle look. And it’s pretty inexpensive and fun to do.

Wainscoting

Wainscoting is another one of our favorites. Wainscoting is wood paneling that lines the lower levels of rooms. We had a ton of wainscoting in our last home, and to us, it brought such a custom and elegant taste to the home.

I miss it every day in our new house, and it’s def on our to-do list in spaces such as our dining room. Here’s an example of wainscoting that was around the staircase in our former home.

We’ve also recommended it in hallways, kids areas and spaces that have high traffic. Throw up some wainscoting and paint it a dark color.

That way it hides all the nicks and marks from the toys banging up against the walls.

And if you’re afraid to take your entire home to a dark color, dark wainscoting is a great compromise. However, we did the wainscoting white and the rest of our walls in a dark gray. But that was pre-kids. Ha!

Beadboard

Beadboard is a row of narrow wood planks lined up vertically. You can buy beadboard in panels, so it’s easy and cost effective to put up.

In this little bathroom, we had one heck of a time getting the former wallpaper off the walls. So, we totally cheated and just threw up beadboard right on top of the wallpaper.

Ceiling Molding

And don’t forget about those ceilings, we always do. I mean, I for one would never think of freshening up my ceiling. And a little paneling and molding goes a long way when you add it to your ceiling.

We recently did this ceiling in one of our finished basements, just in the cozy nook area by the fireplace. We were a little nervous at first that this ceiling style would make the nook area feel smaller, but it actually made it feel larger and gave the space a nice custom touch.
