You know how much we love our bold and colorful tile, textures and patterns! And after the experience we had designing out our one of a kind kitchen backsplash with Mercury Mosaics we knew wanted to do it all over again and bring some tile happiness into our basement bar area as well.
Early this past summer, we got to work alongside the Mercury Mosaics crew and started designing out our wall tile. Here’s the before of our basement space when we first moved in…
And being we love to entertain and this was a blank slate down in our lower level, we knew we wanted to incorporate a basement bar to hang in with our friends and family. We saved the cabinets from our kitchen remodel and repurposed them for our bar.
After we finished adding the bar into our basement, we still knew it needed something more! We needed to bring some more life into the space!
So the lovely Mercedes, owner of Mercury Mosaics, drove herself out to our home and we chatted for hours about the different possibilities of what we could do to this area.
The thing I love about Mercedes is that she doesn’t just think about the tile design, she thinks about all of the elements, from what other furniture, decor, other brands to use besides just hers, our style, our taste, colors we love, and how we are going to use the space. She thinks about the entire big picture to pull together her tile designs. She asks questions that make you think deeper.
And through this conversation we were able to pull together a few solid ideas! Mercedes is a connector and brining good people together so she also brought up using all of Room & Board furniture, having Solid Metal Arts build out this shelving design I was dreaming off, and incorporating another local makers art, Ashley Mary.
And this is what we came up with!
For the tile color palette we knew we wanted to pull in the blues from our cabinetry and play off of more colors that would compliment one another. Our basement bathroom has deep moody forest green, so we also knew we wanted to tie those colors in as well. Mercedes talked through having an ombre tile effect where it would gradually flow from white into all of the colors and I was all about it! She also educated me on how herringbone will forever be a timeless design and that would be fun to play into the design while maintaining the ombre gradual flow.
So after a few design iterations and back and forth’s here was the final design with nine different tile colors!
We threw it into our design program with the shelving design as well to be able to see the full picture, and were in love!
Once we signed off on the designs, the tile elves at Mercury Mosaics got to work!
Our favorite thing about designing out custom backsplashes is that they know the exact measurements of our space and build off of that, putting the designs together and mesh mount the tile which alleviates a lot of our prep work! This makes for less cuts and a quicker and smoother install.
So once the tile is in our hands, it’s like a puzzle and we just put it back together again! These sheets come with an easy-to-follow, numbered map. It was like putting together a simple puzzle when it came to the install.
Once the custom tile was designed, packed and shipped out, and unpackaged and laid out again… we got to installing! With their guided map, we got all of the tile laid out, inspected, and then we got to work.
And just like that within a couple nights work, our tile is fully installed and we can hardly wait to share with you the full reveal soon!
Once the tile was up the final decision we had to make was, which Ashley Mary art to use?! All of her pieces are way too gorgeous and it was so hard to pick just one! We narrowed it down to these two options…
… threw them into our design program to see which one we loved best and decided on…
This one!
At first I was thinking, option 2, because I loved the bold use of colors. But after we threw the poll up on Instagram everyone said this one is the one as the colors flowed better with the tile.
Finishing up the styling now and will have the full reveal over to you guys soon!
Hope this space inspires you for all of your design and home improvement needs as much as it does us.
