Styling your Floating Shelves for the Holidays

Styling your Floating Shelves for the Holidays 1

Spread the love.

The snow was falling this week so we decided it was time to crank up the Christmas tunes and whip out our holiday decor! Regardless of the snow though, I’ve always been a person that likes to get into the holiday spirit right after Halloween has come and gone. And I know Thanksgiving hasn’t hit yet, but I’m a person that likes to decorate now and incorporate all the holiday decor that will take me from now all the all the way into New Years, being they all hit so quickly, and I don’t want to spend time redecorating every month.

4 Quick Tips to Styling your Floating Shelves for the Holidays | construction2style

So today we’re sharing how we transformed our open shelving in our kitchen from fall to winter decor with four of our best tips. And bonus, you can take and use these four steps with any shelves in your home, not just within your kitchen.

We also did a video walking you through what we did and what we love to use here on Instagram.

1. Use Practical Items

When it comes to floating shelves in the kitchen, or anywhere for that matter, the biggest piece of advice that I always say is to use practical items. As in items that you actually use! When we’re incorporating open shelving into kitchen designs often times clients are nervous they won’t be able to keep up with the cleaning of them. But, if you put things on the shelves that you actually use, you’ll be constantly wiping them down just like you do your countertops when you use things and before you put them back up again.

Practical things for our kitchen that I like to use are items such as glassware, plates, bowls, and cookbooks. Things that we use daily.

2. Balance with Variations of Height

Next, you want your eye to flow from side to side, which means you want to have a variety of things with different heights. If it’s in a kitchen this could be higher stacks of plates and bowls on one side than the other, taller glasses, etc.

Since we’re decorating for the holidays, I’m bringing in some holiday decor! I’m also all about holiday decor that can carry me through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, so I like to keep my decor a little more neutral and not have so much red and green and rather use metallics.

3. Incorporate Pops of Color

Regardless of the holidays or not, I always like to add in pops of color. Whether that is through the decor or colorful dishes we use. The pops of color can also come through things such as a clock, books, candles, etc.

We got those couple of Christmas trees new this year from Target. They are called the bottle brush sisal chrismtas trees. I went back and forth between green or red but at the end of the day I knew I wanted this decor to go up right after Halloween and not make it too “christmas-y”.

4. Add in all the Greenery

I’m all about the greenery on any and all shelving. Typically I always have a couple of real plants and a few faux. But as we move into the holiday season, I’m replacing my potted and faux plants with some real greenery. We get ours from a local garden store here in MN that we love called Bachman’s, but you can find greens at any local garden store and even at places like Home Depot.

Or else if you have some pine trees in your yard, get outside and cut some clippings off for some quick and easy free greenery! I do this a lot for different shelving throughout our home because we all know how fast greenery can add up once we really get cruising for the holiday decor.
